Pleasanton High School BPA advances 18 to State competition

On Saturday, Jan. 22, the Pleasanton High School Business Professionals of America (BPA) organization traveled to Medina Valley High School to compete in the Regional competition. After an outstanding showing, 18 students qualified for the State competition.

Qualifying in individual events were: Thang Nguyen – 1st place, Digital Media Production; Courtney Henson – 1st place, Administrative Support Research Project; Alexis Ramos – 1st place, Payroll Accounting; Lilee Ramirez – 1st place, Health Leadership Topics; Delanie De La Fuente – 1st place, Prepared Speech; Elynore Hernandez – 2nd place, Digital Media Production; Conner George – 2nd place, Device Configuration and Troubleshooting; and Jazmin Bernal – 2nd place, Health Administrative Procedures.

Qualifying in team events were: Kenneth Alegria and Michaela Anguiano – 1st place in Broadcast News Production Team; Brandi Barnett, Adyson Brymer and Ashlyn Vera – 2nd place, Presentation Management Team; Shayne Cazier and Gage Pawelek – 2nd place, Podcast Production Team; and Madeline Brymer, Sadie Hartmann and Paige Read – 2nd place, Small Business Management Team.

Pleasanton High School BPA advances 18 to State competition

Students who placed as state alternates include: Alexandria Balderas – 3rd place, Extemporaneous Speech; Jaelyn Morales – 5th place, Intermediate Word Processing; Alejandra Martinez – 5th place, Banking and Financing; and Preston Pilgrim – 6th place, Banking and Finance.

Students could also participate in open events to test their knowledge of certain topics. These events do not advance to state. Results are as follows: Neil Patel – 2nd place, Computer Program Concepts, 3rd place, Medical Terminology Concepts and 4th place, Information Technology Concepts; Alexandria Balderas – 2nd place, Medical Terminology Concepts and 3rd place, Business Management Meeting Concepts; Giancarlo Garcia – 3rd place, Computer Program Concepts and 4th place, Administrative Support Concepts; Conner George – 6th place, Information Technology Concepts; and Jaelyn Morales – 3rd place, Digital Communications & Design Concepts.

Ashlyn Vera led the Regional Conference as the Area 2, Region 2 President. Her duties included opening the ceremonies and distributing awards and medals at the Awards Ceremony. At the Regionals conference, Vera completed her term and was able to pass the torch to the newly elected Regional President, Alexis Ramos. Ramos was installed before the delegates, and also assisted in the awards ceremony. Both incoming and outgoing presidents will be helping the Texas State Officer team at the State Leadership Conference in Fort Worth.

The organization’s advisor is Janie Olivarri. Having sponsored the club for 23 years, Olivarri is very excited to be taking 18 students to State in March, and is very dedicated to the success of her students and thoroughly enjoys her time with the organization.

“Every year I am impressed with the drive and dedication the students have in competing. Their projects get better and better every year. Being the advisor of this organization is the best part of my job,” Olivarri said.

Congratulations to the students moving on to the State Leadership Conference in Fort Worth taking place March 2-5.
