The building that was previously home to PennLive’s newsroom and its advertising department for a decade has been sold. Here’s who purchased this Cumberland County building previously occupied by PennLive for a decade Here’s who purchased this Cumberland County building previously occupied by PennLive for a decade

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has purchased the large red building at 2020 Technology Parkway in Hampden Township in Cumberland Technology Park.

“UPMC is constantly looking to expand its services to best serve patients by advancing care everywhere,” Lou Baverso, chief operating officer, UPMC in Central Pa. said in a provided statement. “The newly purchased building at 2020 Technology Parkway in Mechanicsburg will be an ambulatory medical office complex providing access to new healthcare services on the West Shore. The complex is slated to open later this year.”

The new building is of course a perfect location for UPMC. The health system’s West Shore Hospital, UPMC Outpatient Services formerly known as UPMC Fredricksen Outpatient Center and the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Rocco and Nancy Ortenzio Cancer Pavilion are all located across the street.

The West Shore Hospital opened in 2014 and was expanded in 2020.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The three-story building at 2020 Technology Parkway has 170,000-square-feet of space, according to a CBRE real estate listing. The facility was expanded in 2013.

The Patriot-News/PennLive’s business offices, newsroom and its advertising department moved into the third floor of the building in 2010 from its former offices on Market Street in Harrisburg. In 2013, some of the newspaper’s operations moved next door to The Patriot-News plant at 1900 Patriot Drive. The newsroom and advertising department moved to the first floor of the building that year. In early 2020, PennLive left the building moving its newsroom and advertising department next door to the plant.

Other companies that have occupied the building over the years include Novitas Solutions and IBM. Novitas is still leasing space in the building, a spokesperson for UPMC confirmed. Officials for Novitas couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

UPMC isn’t the only medical system expanding in the area. Not that far away on the other side of the I-81 interchange off of Wertzville Road, Penn State Health has opened a 300,000-square-foot hospital and already has plans to expand in the future.
