Is it time to bring some of Fabula design back?

When HMD Global announced that Nokia phones are coming back to the smartphone market, a lot of Nokia fans hoped to see a Lumia-like design. Nokia did some exquisite designs of its phones, but it peaked with the creation of Fabula design and Nokia N9. This modern shape of smartphones, relieved of anything unnecessary was used to boost the Nokia Lumia series of phones. In that period we have seen beautiful phones like Lumia 920, Lumia 1520, or Lumia 720. To some, the best of that design was Lumia 925, but we all agree that Microsoft successfully killed it with Lumia 950 XL.

The first Nokia devices from 2016 had some elements of Lumia design, but the young start-up didn’t want to be the copycat of some past times. They wanted to take bits and pieces of the glory times and create something of their own. They were mostly successful with phones like Nokia 3, Nokia 8, first Nokia 9 r Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, and maybe Nokia 3.4/5.4. There should also be mentioned the new Nokia 3310, with its shape of a gorgeous pebble.

Nokia 8.3 5G, on the other hand, is beautiful from afar, but it is rather bulky in hand. The same goes for Nokia X20, which is not the pretender for the best smartphone design award.Nokia Mobile experimented also with colors, but they have never been bold enough to launch the bright RGB color scheme from Lumia days, at least not in the smartphone line-up. Well, they definitely hit the spot with polar green Nokia 7.2, Polar night of Nokia 8.3 5G or sa

nd, and purple Nokia 5.4. Nokia 1 Plus was definitely the closest to the Lumia color palettes, especially the red version.

I noticed the change in the phone design, and maybe the design team is struggling to find new shapes that would make the world focus again on the uniqueness of the Nordic Nokia design. The question now is whether Nokia Mobile should go back some 8 or 9 years and take a bit more from the Nokia N9/Fabula design expression?

Nokiaccess tweeted

a nicely done concept of a mid-range Nokia smartphone that uses hopefully slim polycarbonate shell of some Lumia 800/1020 crossover and a camera module of Nokia 8.3 5G. I like the combination of smooth round and straight lines, which reached a high level of synergy. I hope that Nokiaccess envisioned the front with a screen-to-body ratio of at least 95%. A polycarbonate shell should prevent display clacks if dropped on the floor.

Anyways, a nice G series or X series could deserve this kind of design. If almost 5 years ago Nokia Mobile took bits and pieces of Fabula design, maybe it is time they leave bits and pieces of their current design and use a bit more Lumia in the next lineup.

What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks to Nokiaccess for the concept!
