The Health and Specialty Care System has 23,000 jobs in a variety of roles, all of which directly help serve Texans in need. With career advancement opportunities and great benefits, HSCS has a job for people who care.

Nurses

Nurses provide medical care to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Living centers have a variety of nursing positions for licensed vocational nurses and registered nurses. Your job will include administering medicines and treatments, and assessing acute and chronic issues. You’ll work as part of an integrated team and help develop an individualized care plan for each resident of the living center. Some of the people you care for will have complex medical issues and be considered medically fragile, while others might have fewer medical issues but more complicated behavioral health needs.

Nurses work with each living center resident and hospital patient, identifying their strengths and preferences to create an individualized care plan. Our goal is to provide the best quality of life and the most independence possible for each resident.

Nurses also work in specialty areas such as skin integrity and wound care, liaising with local hospitals and community services, providing nursing case management, and overseeing infection control protocols. There is room for promotional growth within each living center nursing department with higher-level nursing positions supervising other nurses, monitoring quality assurance and program compliance, serving as nurse educator, nurse operations officer and chief nurse executive.

Behavioral Health Staff

Behavioral health staff provide therapy for the residents of the state supported living centers. Counselors, psychologists and behaviorists have qualifications ranging from bachelor’s degrees to board certification as a behavioral analyst.

SSLC residents have a wide variety of medical, intellectual, developmental and behavioral health challenges, including co-occurring disorders. Our residents possess remarkable strengths and have dynamic and endearing personalities. Your role is to help the residents, their families and the rest of the team identify the resident’s strengths and preferences and build support plans to help each resident build the skills to achieve his or her short- and long-term goals. Maximizing independence and choice is paramount.

Behavioral Health staff coach and train direct support professionals, helping them work through challenging behaviors with individuals and helping DSPs better understand the function behind each person’s behavior patterns. No one day is the same as the next in this very dynamic role.

Whether it’s food service, laundry service or keeping our facilities in good repair, our support staff is a critical part of helping Texans in need.

Our support services team takes care of all aspects of building maintenance and operations, laundry and custodial operations, food services, supply services, transportation and security.
