ATLANTA—John List, the Kenneth C. Griffin Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago and a best-selling author, will present the 2022 Economics Distinguished Public Lecture on “The Voltage Effect: How to Make Good Ideas Great and Great Ideas Scale,” at the Student Center East Auditorium on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m.

The first 75 to attend the presentation will receive free copies of List’s new book of the same title.

List is best known for his book “The Why Axis: Hidden Motives and the Undiscovered Economics of Everyday Life,” co-authored with Uri Gneezy, and his field experiments, most recently focused on the gender earnings gap in the gig economy which has led to collaborative work with various major rideshare firms, airlines, retailers, information technology leaders and nonprofits.

“My passion is using field experiments to explore economic questions,” List says on his University of Chicago website. “I view field experiments as representing a unique manner in which to obtain data because they force the researcher to understand everyday phenomena, many of which we stumble upon frequently.”

“John List is the leader in developing methods and practice of field experiments − a major contribut

ion to advancing economics as an empirical science − and an innovator in applied economics and education as principal investigator on grants to fund the Science of Philanthropy Initiative and the Griffin Early Childhood Center,” said Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar James Cox, director of the Experimental Economics Center (ExCEN) and the Noah Langdale Jr. Chair in Economics in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. “It is a great pleasure for me to present John List to the community of faculty, staff and students at Georgia State and to introduce Professor List to our vibrant community.”

List has served in the White House on the Council of Economic Advisers. He is member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the Econometric Society and has been honored with numerous awards including the Arrow Prize for Senior Economists, the Kenneth Galbraith Award, the Yrjo Jahnsson Lecture Prize, the Klein Lecture Prize and the Hartsook Growing Philanthropy Award. He was also named a Top 50 Innovator in The NonProfit Times for his work on charitable giving.
