From: Office of the Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer; Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost
The rapidly evolving global information technology and cybersecurity landscape requires Virginia Tech’s IT services to be nimble and responsive to the changing needs and expectations of research and instructional faculty, university administrators, staff, and students. Robust IT capabilities are integral to achieving Virginia Tech’s ambitious Beyond Boundaries vision.
Charged by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors to assess the current state of IT at the university, the Office of the SVP/CBO engaged Deloitte to conduct a thorough university-wide review of information technology operations and security. That review began in September 2021 and proceeded through the fall, covering seven areas in their final report: IT governance, IT finance, IT talent, technology capabilities, service management, and cybersecurity. The report included detailed analysis as well as a set of recommendations. With the support of leaders in the Office of the SVP/CBO, the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO, the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, and other key stakeholders at Virginia Tech, the next step is for wider review by the university community.
The Virginia Tech IT Transformation, which will be strongly informed by this report’s assessment and recommendations, is a new program focused on strengthening IT across Virginia Tech. The effort will aim to align our core organizations, processes, and services; build a culture of collaboration; enable shared governance; address cybersecurity risks; and provide career pathways and support for IT professionals to assist in the recruitment and retention of our valued employees. The IT Transformation will foster innovation and efficiency across the university.
