One area where LCD TVs lag behind OLED is in the quality of the blacks they can produce. LG is aiming to close that gap next month with the launch of its new QNED TV models that combine Quantum Dot NanoCell color and Mini LED backlighting.

These are not small TVs, with the sizes ranging from a 65-inch right up to an 86-inch model. There will be 8K QNED99 and QNED95 series models and a 4K QNED90 option, too. In each case, LG has crammed in up to 30,000 LED lights and 2,500 local dimming zones, which the company claims delivers "10 times better contrast ratio than conventional LCD TVs." It also means deeper blacks and more detail in dark areas of the screen.

The Quantum Dot NanoCell color technology is expected to offer more accurate and richer colors, with 100% of the DCI-P3 spectrum across a 3D color space achieved as certified by Intertek.

LG also designed these new TVs with the environment in mind, and received Eco-Product certification(Opens in a new window) from SGS Société Générale de Surveillance SA of Switzerland. This certification considers four environmental criteria over the product life cycle, including recycled material use, energy consumption/efficiency, ease of disassembly for recycling, and hazardous substances (RoHS and REACH).

No official pricing has been announced yet, but according to a report back in February by FlatpanelsHD(Opens in a new window), prices will start at around $3,000 for the 65-inch 4K model.
