YPSILANTI, MI — Eastern Michigan University’s GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology program is joining CODE 313 and PNC Foundation to create two all-girl eSports teams for Detroit high school students.EMU partners in creating new, all-girls eSports teams in Michigan EMU partners in creating new, all-girls eSports teams in Michigan

Digital Divas, a series of programs founded at EMU in 2010, encourages girls to explore areas in science, technology, engineering and math — also known as STEM. The partnership between EMU’s program, CODE 313 and PNC Foundation will give students an opportunity to examine STEM through the world of competitive gameplay, officials said.

“Partnering with CODE 313 is really exciting,” said Bia Hamed, K-12 STEM outreach director. “We are like-minded organizations that want to better our communities by providing opportunities for kids through learning engagements with STEM. It’s a blessing and humbling to do the work I do with organizations and sponsors that make my work possible.”

The Digital Divas’ goals include introducing middle and high school girls to careers in STEM, recruiting more girls into STEM majors in post-secondary education and breaking down gender stereotypes regarding STEM majors and careers. With their involvement in this collaboration, Digital Divas hope to give high school girls the courage and opportunity to study technology through electronic sports, officials said.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, students who are interested will meet in virtual settings for practices. League fees will be waived for those who will be a part of the girls eSports teams. They will also receive free materials such as a laptop, gaming mouse, headset and gaming software.

“Once joining, the girls can develop skills such as communicating, problem-solving, critical thinking, self-advocacy and how to be a team player,” Hamed said. “This is a great introduction to STEM. Education is transformational and it’s my goal to help better someone’s life through a fun, nontraditional way.”
